Theory of Operation /Optical System
In a refractive index detector of deflection type, the light beam undergoes a deflection in proportion to a difference in refractive index between one liquid and the other as it passes through the two compartements of the flow cell, each being filled with a different liquid. The deflection of the light beam is taken as a displacement an the light receiving element (4-field photodiode built into RI) and is shown as a difference of the refractive index.
The light beam emitted from the tungsten lamp passes through a condenser lens, slit no. 1, collimator lens, slit no. 2 and flow fell.
The light beam is reflected by a mirrow installed right behind the flow cell and resend through the flow cell, slit no. 2 and collimator lens onto the light element (Photo Diode).
